New Welsh Review 80, Summer 2008

Editorial:

Back to the Present (Francesca Rhydderch)

The photographs by Tina Carr and Annemarie Schöne that feature in this issue of New Welsh Review serve as a stark reminder of how the present becomes past, and of what happens if those of us who are in one way or another keepers of our histories abandon the notion of posterity. The images published here are drawn from a larger series, which has been exhibited in London and Wales; they include a variety of domestic interiors and exteriors, and an extensive series of chapel images. What is compelling about them is the beating heart underneath the ‘still lives’ that you first assume them to be.

  • Theatres of Memory by Andrew Green
The Librarian of the National Library of Wales, puts the recent digitisation debate into a broader historical context.

  • One Hundred Welsh Poets by Alan Riach

  • A Female Tradition by Kirsti Bohata
Kirsti Bohata considers three recent publications from Jane Aaron, Katie Gramich and Ursula Masson that offer a feminist perspective on the Anglo-Welsh canon, and which mark ‘an important turing point in the field’; they have ‘demonstrated beyond question that Welsh women could and did write’.
