POEM Sophie McKeand

NWR Issue 116

Child of Divorce

When your childhood is a fragmentation grenade it is difficult to learn how to breathe.
BlOwOuts rip through the papier mâché history you painstakingly mould
into walls.

Dithering between sniper-sharp criticism & car-bomb gifts
you learn to sink friends & instincts like looted art.

Sophie McKeand is an award-winning poet, a TEDx speaker, and the current Young People’s Laureate Wales. She has appeared regularly on BBC Radio Wales and, more recently, S4C: Codi Pac and Profiad Gwaith. Her new collection, Rebel Sun, was published by Parthian this summer. During 2017 she was a Poetry Society SLAMbassador; was listed as one of thirty people who will be ‘shaping the Welsh agenda’ over the next thirty years by the Institute of Welsh Affairs, and was a Literature Wales bursary recipient. Her poetry is widely published, including in Poetry Wales, Dark Mountain, The Lonely Crowd and Tears in the Fence, and she performs regularly across the UK including at festivals such as Hay, Wilderness, N° 6, Green Man, and Port Eliot. She has also appeared in the international Kolkata Literary Festival in India as part of the British Council Wales India/Wales exchange.
