The Life of Almost

A dreary, dry Sunday afternoon.

Far from the sea coast.

Stifled; sick; quiet in the wrong way.

Border country.

Stiff-backed and wondering. The back of my house had blown dark and everything was ill. And yet... oh, it was a mass of muddling things: we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going the other way: I wanted to be sure I had the spring of hope in the season of darkness, but these I could not distinguish.

So. This is when you need a story...

Anna Vaught is a novelist, poet, essayist, reviewer and editor. Her books are Killing Hapless Ally, a semi-autobiographical novel (2016) and a novella, The Life of Almost (2018, published in August) for Patrician Press, from which this extract is a preview. Anna’s historical novel, Saving Lucia, about Violet Gibson, the Irish aristocrat who shot Mussolini, and Lucia Joyce, daughter of James Joyce, will be published by Bluemoose Books in 2020. She is currently writing her fourth novel, a homage to Southern Gothic, called The Hollows, and contributing to, among others, Litro, Review31, Visual Verse, Losslit, Writers and Artists and Contemporary Small Press. Anna is of a large Welsh family but was raised in Somerset and has lived and travelled all over the world.
