Our Cat Brought Home a Starling


Our cat brought home a starling
And left it limp
though still just about alive and twitching,
Upon our welcome mat
It must have been some great sport
that led to its ragged and ruined
State of near-death...


Joseph Pardoe is the winner of the 19–25 category of the Prologue to an Adventure international competition, 2014. Prologue to an Adventure was devised as part of the Dylan Thomas centenary celebrations, Developing Dylan 100, for writers between seven and twenty-five. This oldest age category was co-selected by Joe Dunthorne, author of Submarine, and Gwen Davies.
