POEM Stuart Pickford

NWR Issue 107

The Silent Healer

(From a Balcony in Puerto de la Duquesa)

That pencil line in the haze: Tangier;
down the coast, the big chin of Gib,
Barbary apes filming themselves for YouTube.

Those Atlantic blooms, the jellyfish, mass
to invade beaches whose water is too warm
or they’re netted for upsetting tourists...

Stuart Pickford is the recipient of an Eric Gregory award. His first and only full collection, The Basics, was published by Redbeck Press (2002) and shortlisted for the Forward Best First Collection prize. Stuart lives in Harrogate and teaches in a local comprehensive school.
